I'm submitting this because it might prove useful, and so it could be considered for the troubleshooting article on auto spell check, since it fixed my problem. I don't know the details, but I'm guessing the process described above cleared out some residual issue developed during the course of adding custom words, but that's only a guess. I noticed the same tendency in MS Word, after a certain amount of custom words were added to the dictionary the auto spell check ceased functioning. That fixed the problem, and now misspelled words are again underlined. Without exciting the program or restarting the computer I simply returned to the same screen, checked the boxes for both options and again clicked the "OK" button. In the third panel labeled options, I unchecked the options, "Check spelling as you type," and, "Check grammar as you type," and then clicked the "OK" button. Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids I continued experimenting and resolved the problem as follows. I followed the entire tutorial for auto spell check, and did not resolve the issue. The tutorial says "Look at the paragraph style." Nothing about right clicking, "context menus", blah, blah, blah. If dark or not so dark means "on" or "off", it does not seem to make any difference to the spell check option. I click on it and it goes dark or not so dark. What I said is that I don't seem to have any option to turn it on or off. Yes, I do have a button with abc and a red line under it. If you can, upload a sample file for testing purposes. There’s a bug in Apache OpenOffice, and maybe in Libre as well, that messes up spell checking for files created in Windows Explorer (the file manager, not the Internet browser). Take a look at Tools - Autocorrect - Autocorrect options to see what it will do for you (and disable anything that you don’t like).ĮDIT: Make sure that hunspell is also ticked, that’s the actual spell checking module. Lowercase changing to uppercase is Autocorrect’s work. Please note that the spell checker doesn’t automatically correct any errors, it just highlights them. But you cal also modify the Default paragraph style, select the Font tab and select a language there. You can do that in tools - Options - Language settings - Languages - Default Languages for Documents. You have to assign a language to your text, or the spell checker won’t work.
